Introduction to Glass Beads and Pendants

Explore the fascinating world of Glass Beads and Pendants.  Learn how to use the shop tools and torches to melt and shape glass into colorful beads and pendants.   No experience is required, but any level student welcome.  Intermediate level glass beads include: Inside/Out, Fuming with Silver and Gold, and other color techniques and bead designs.

Introduction to Lampworking

This intensive weekly class will also teach all the basics of Lampworking.  The weekly class gives the students more torch time to explore different applications of the skills being acquired.  Learn how to safely use all the studio equipment, and learn how to setup your own studio.  Make beads, pendants, and ornaments using Moretti (soft) and Borosilicate (pyrex) glass.  Learn how to make animals and flowers, and integrate them into beads and other jewelry. Each student will learn how to work with hollow glass to create sculptural and abstract forms such as cups, jars, perfume bottles and small bud vases.  Students will have enough experience and knowledge to practice on their own or pursue other classes.

No experience necessary.

Walk-In Workshop

Get a taste of the fascinating world of Glass Beads and Pendants.  Make a Glass bead with your own hands.  Pick your own colors and shape, and a professional bead maker will walk you through each step to make your bead come alive.

Glassblowing-1– Introduction to Glassblowing

This course is intended for beginners with little or no experience with molten glass.  Demonstrations, technical exercises, and plenty of hands-on work introduce students to different aspects of blown glass.  Learn how to use the tools and shop equipment properly and safely.  Make paperweights, glass flowers, and small blown objects such as cups and vases.

Glassblowing-2 – Cups, Bottles and Bowls

In this course, students refine skills introduced in Glassblowing-1, preparing them for intermediate skills and intensive glassblowing classes. Students concentrate on fundamentals with hands-on experience.  Instructors demonstrate how to make a variety of vessel forms and emphasize teamwork, skill development, and communication. Students learn to create blown forms such as bowls.

Glass Fusing & Slumping
Stained Glass

Glass fusing is taking cut glass of different colors, sizes and shapes, arranging them artistically and melting the pieces together in a flat form in a kiln.  Slumping is taking the flat fused glass and giving it a three-dimensional shape by melting the glass in a mold in a kiln.

Basic Glass Fusing & Slumping

Consists of 3 two-hour classes

First Class – Learn to cut glass and layout a design to create flat coasters or tiles

Second Class – Learn to create jewelry such as pendants and pins

Third Class – Learn how to prepare your molds for slumping bracelets, bowls or plates

Intermediate Glass Fusing and Slumping

Consists of 3 two-hour classes

First Class – Learn how to create “pattern bars” – multi-color glass bars and use single-color stringers in your designs

Second Class – Learn glass painting and the use of enamels and liquid stringers

Third Class – Learn how to drape glass over a mold for new and interesting shapes that can be used as vases or candle holders

Notes:

  • Class size is small
  • Classes are continuous – students may join at any time
  • While taking a course, there is no charge for studio time outside of class hours
  • When not taking a course, normal studio hour rates apply – $10/hour
  • Materials can be purchased from the Colby Glass Studio
  • When not taking a course, pieces can be fired for a charge at the Colby Glass Studio
  • Students should be at least 12 years of age
  • Protection for the eyes is recommended when cutting glass

Students register for 6 consecutive weekly two-hour classes for $240 (includes free studio time).  Classes are small and continuous; all skill levels are welcome.  You may start anytime.  Materials included for initial class only.   Private lessons are $50 per hour and $37.50 per hour for 2 students; materials included.
